Shallow Bay to Deep Creek Adventure Run

I enjoyed the run/trek part of the small adventure races I've run, but then the rest of those races (bike/paddle, etc.) was always a slog.  I convinced Brent to do our own Adventure Run, without all of the other "stuff".  So today we had a totally awesome run from our friends' place near Shallow Bay (s. end of Lake Laberge), over the grassy hills and ridges west of Jackfish Bay, to finish near Deep Creek.  Totally good route, lots of great open hill sides to run on, great weather.

Here's our silly pictures from the run,

and then route we took (be patient, the map takes a little while to load).  Click on the map to add the satellite view, then you can see all the nice grassy hills.

Ok, and extra geeky, the 3d flythrough:

Forest's 2010 Orienteering Adventure

Decided to go to some orienteering races this year - the US Orienteering championships are in the Washington "Scablands" which is a really wild, catastrophic landscape created by glacial outburst floods.

Next weekend is the North American Orienteering championships in Cranbrook, BC. I've worked there several times over the years, and it always looked like really good terrain - open pine forest - it looks like really fast running forest.

Here are some pictures so far:

Whitehorse * Adventure * Run '09: Back to the Wild

Recruitment has been rapidly filling the ranks of this year's Whitehorse * Adventure * Run, or W*A*R as it is affectionately known as. Multiple veteran teams are returning to this year's run, including a return of Team Alaska!

The W*A*R is Whitehorse's ALL-TERRAIN half-marathon. Teams of two have to complete a 21-km cross-country adventure race style run. The event is accessible to all runners and only minimal navigational skills are required (if you can read a road map, you are good to go). Details and registration are found at the W*A*R website:

http://www.yukonorienteering.ca/war.html

This year's W*A*R is on Sunday, May 31st. 8am Registration & Mandatory Gear check. Pre-registration has now expired, but we'll still accept late recruitment - here is the link to the recruitment forms.

For folks not ready for an all-terrain half-marathon, there is also a recreational class called P.E.A.C.E. (People Enjoying Adventurous Competitive Exercise) which is solo and typically 10km in length.

Whitehorse Hash House Harriers Start Running Again

WhiteHorse Hash House Harriers (WH4) have started their second season - WH4's first run of 2009 (Run #013) was on Thursday last week (good turn out, 19 some runners, but not enough beer). Runs will be every two weeks throughout the summer

If your are interested in a social, very inclusive running club, you can get future run info at the WH4 website at: http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/whitehorsehhh/

For general information on Hash House Harriers, have a look at the wiki entry:

2008 Yukon Orienteering Campaign Results

Just for fun, I developed a ranking system for the Yukon Orienteering Association. It is based off of the IOF system, but ranks ALL Yukon Orienteerers over a season. It also "flattens" categories/courses so it acknowledges orienteerers can be competitive at what ever level they are at.

The ranking system has no official or sanctioned purpose. It is just for fun to see, relatively, who is the Yukon's best orienteerers and how you improved over the orienteering season
